Hey Kids! This page is for everyone! It has activities that you can do at any time. There are projects, video games, dance videos, a drama unit and some non-screen time games. They are activities that you can do on your own or with housemates. If you have any ideas that you want to share with our music community, feel free to email me at bharling@sd70.bc.ca.
All the new ideas are at the bottom of this page. They will have a yellow background. Note, that I changed the Just Dance videos but they are still in their original spot in the white section.
Non-screen Time Games
1. Name That Tune: Listen to two to three seconds of music and guess the tune, name the genre (the type of music), who is the artist/musician. Play with your family. Who has the best ear and knowledge for music?
2. Song Charades: Everyone writes down song titles on a slip of paper. Put the paper into a bowl. One person picks from the bowl and acts the song out. How many did you get? It’s not easy is it?
3. Describe What You Hear: Listen to a piece of music and write three descriptive words to describe what you hear. What instruments did you hear? What was the tempo (speed of the music)? Is it loud or quiet (dynamics)? Does the song have a lot of changes or does it stay the same within the song?
4. What's That Instrument: Name the instruments you hear in a song? Can you put those instruments in the right category of the instrument families (string, woodwind, brass and percussion)?
5. Name That Note: Make a circle on a piece of paper. I used a large yogurt lid to create my circle. Cut the circle out. Make the circle have 6 equal parts. Put the letters C, D, E, F, G and A into each triangle of the circle. Use a paperclip and pencil to create a spinner in the center of your circle. This will be your spinner. Create staff lines by making 5 parallel lines on a sheet of paper. If you want you can put a treble clef at the beginning of your staff lines. Now spin and see if you can place the note in the right spot. Remember, the notes on the lines are Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge and the notes in the spaces are FACE. See our lesson on theory if you forget how it works.
6. Percussion Musical Chairs: This works like musical chairs so 1 person has to turn the music on and off. Everyone else has a chair in a circle or a line. Each chair has a piece of paper and pencil on it. The music begins and everyone moves around the chairs. When the music stops you have to write a 4 beat bar of music on the paper. The music starts again. When the music stops you add another bar to the music already written. When you have had enough, you can look and try to perform the songs that you created with your family. Maybe you could use instruments or stuff from around your house (pots, pans, spoons, sticks or buckets) to make a band.
